Canva vs Photoshop for Beginners

When you are just starting with design you will probably ask yourself this question: should I use Canva or Photoshop?

At first they seem to be very similar. Both Canva and Photoshop let you make designs edit photos. Make things look nicer.. When you actually try Canva and Photoshop you will see that they are pretty different.

I have used Canva and Photoshop. To be honest which one you pick really depends on what you need and how much time you want to spend learning Canva and Photoshop.

What Is Canva?

Canva is a design tool made for people who are just starting with design. Canva is simple, clean and easy to understand.

Canva has templates for everything, such as:

  • Instagram posts
  • Presentations
  • Posters
  • Thumbnails

All you have to do with Canva is pick a template change the text maybe change a few colors with Canva and you are done with Canva. There are no steps, no stress with Canva. Canva is one of those tools where you never feel lost which’s nice when you are just starting with Canva.

What Is Photoshop?

Adobe Photoshop is a tool. Photoshop is powerful. It can feel overwhelming at first.

With Photoshop you can do things, such as:

  • Edit photos in detail with Photoshop
  • Create designs from scratch with Photoshop
  • Use layers, effects and all sorts of tools with Photoshop

The thing with Photoshop is that it does not feel easy in the beginning. There is a learning curve with Photoshop. It is actually pretty steep if I am being honest.. Once you get the hang of Photoshop, the possibilities with Photoshop are huge.

Ease of Use

This is probably the difference between Canva and Photoshop.

Canva is super beginner-friendly. You can drag, drop, type. You are done with Canva. You can make a design with Canva in like 10–15 minutes no problem.

Photoshop is different from Canva. You will need to learn how things work with Photoshop, such as layers, tools, menus. It takes a bit of time to get comfortable with Photoshop.

So if you just want something simple Canva is the winner here hands down.

Features and Flexibility

Now this is where Photoshop shines, not Canva.

Canva is great. Canva has limits. Canva is built for designs not heavy editing with Canva.

Photoshop on the hand lets you control every tiny detail with Photoshop. Professionals use Photoshop for a reason. If you want to go into design with Photoshop Photoshop gives you freedom but that freedom comes with a price: more learning with Photoshop.

Convenience

Sometimes you just need things done fast with Canva or Photoshop.

With Canva you open your browser pick a template with Canva and finish your design with Canva in minutes. It is easy, smooth, no fuss with Canva.

Photoshop takes a little time than Canva. Even small edits need a few steps with Photoshop. Photoshop is not slow it is just not as instant as Canva.

So if speed matters Canva usually feels better for beginners.

Cost

Money matters, especially if you are starting out with Canva or Photoshop.

Canva has a version that is actually pretty powerful. You can do a lot with Canva without spending a dime on Canva.

Photoshop on the hand is paid. You will usually need a subscription for Photoshop, which might be overkill if you are just learning with Photoshop.

So if budget is tight Canva is the option.

Which One Should You Choose?

Honestly it depends on your goals with Canva or Photoshop.

If you:

  • Want designs with Canva
  • Have no experience with Canva or Photoshop
  • Do not want to spend time learning with Photoshop

Then Canva is perfect for you.

If you:

  • Want to learn professional design with Photoshop
  • Need advanced editing with Photoshop
  • Do not mind spending time learning with Photoshop

Then Photoshop is worth it for you.

In short Canva is easy and fast which is great for beginners or quick projects with Canva. Photoshop takes effort but it opens up way more possibilities with Photoshop. Most people actually start with Canva get comfortable, with Canva and later move on to Photoshop.
