How to Use Canva for Beginners
If you have ever wanted to make a poster, social media post or a presentation that actually looks good Canva is probably one of the tools to start with. I remember the time I opened Canva. I was a little lost. There are many templates, colors and options in Canva that it can feel overwhelming at first.. Honestly once you get the hang of using Canva it’s actually really fun to create with Canva.

In this guide I’ll walk you through the basics of Canva step by step so you can start designing like a pro even if you’ve never touched a design tool like Canva before.
1. Create a Canva Account
The first thing you need to do is create a Canva account. You can use your email, Google or even Facebook to sign up for Canva.
Once you’re in Canva you’ll see the home screen with all sorts of templates and options. Don’t worry if it looks crowded. Most of it is templates to give you ideas for your Canva designs.
2. Choose a Canva Template or Start from Scratch
Canva has templates for everything:
- Instagram posts
- Posters
- Presentations
- Flyers
- YouTube thumbnails
If you want something choose a Canva template. It already has the layout, colors and fonts so you just need to change the text and images in Canva.
If you feel adventurous you can start from scratch with Canva. This gives you freedom but requires a little more effort with Canva.
3. Customize Text in Canva
Once you have a Canva template click on the text boxes to edit them. You can change the font, size, color. Even add effects in Canva.
One tip I like to use in Canva: try not to use than two or three fonts in a single design. Many fonts can make it look messy. Simple is usually better when designing with Canva.
4. Add Images and Elements in Canva
Canva has a library of free images, icons and shapes. You can also upload your images if you want something specific for your Canva design.
Drag and drop elements wherever you want in Canva. You can resize them rotate them and even add filters to images in Canva.
Fun fact: sometimes just a small icon or shape can make a Canva design look much cleaner and professional.
5. Play with Colors in Canva
Colors can. Break your Canva design. Canva makes it easy—you can choose colors from -made palettes or create your own colors in Canva.
A good trick for beginners: pick 2–3 colors and stick to them. This keeps your Canva design looking balanced.
6. Use Layers and Arrange Elements in Canva
Sometimes elements overlap in Canva. Canva lets you move things forward or backward which is called layering.
For example if you have a background image and text make sure the text is on top in Canva. Otherwise it might get lost.
7. Save and Download Your Canva Design
Once you’re happy with your Canva design click the Download button. You can choose the format—PNG, JPEG or PDF depending on what you need from Canva.
Canva also saves your work automatically so you don’t have to worry about losing anything if your computer crashes while using Canva.
8. Experiment and Have Fun with Canva
The best way to get comfortable with Canva is to experiment. Don’t be afraid to click around try fonts or move things around in Canva.
I learned the most by making practice designs with Canva. At first they weren’t perfect. Over time I got faster and better at using Canva.
